Rodney Terry Implies Big 12’s Physicality Outmatches SEC
While Texas head coach Rodney Terry hasn’t been the most well-liked coach in the eyes of Big 12 fans this offseason, his comments during Saturday’s post-game press conference were hard to ignore.
Following the Longhorns’ 82-61 loss to Houston, Terry discussed the Cougar’s physical style of defense and mentioned it as something programs must plan for. In addition to the compliment, Terry implied that the Longhorns would experience that to a lesser degree in the SEC.
“You got to be built for it,” Terry said. “If we were going to stay in this league with these guys [Houston], we’d have to build to have that physicality and things of that nature. We still will. We’re going to the SEC. It’s going to be a physical league, too.”
While the Longhorns and Sooners elected to join the SEC in 2024 to join one of the nation’s top football conferences, Rodney Terry and Porter Moser were given the short end of the stick. Texas and Oklahoma find themselves just five months away from officially making a move and leaving behind the best basketball conference in America that continues to grow stronger each season.
With No. 4 Arizona (NET 3), Arizona State (NET 135), Utah (NET 50), and Colorado (NET 42) all heading to the Big 12 Conference in 2024, the league is replacing Texas (NET 33) and Oklahoma (NET 39) with four new teams interested in competing against the best coaches and players in the world.
Rodney Terry and the Longhorns will have to deal with the Big 12’s physicality again on Monday night as Jerome Tang and the Kansas State Wildcats head to town in a must-win game—the matchup tips off at 8:00 PM CT on ESPN+.
