Iowa State has officially named Jake Waters as their running backs coach, elevating him from the Senior Quality Control Coach as was reported be Pete Thamel back on February 9.
Waters began his FBS coaching career as a graduate assistant at Iowa State and is also the former wide receivers coach at UTEP.
If the name feels familiar for another reason, it’s likely that you remember Waters as a quarterback for the Kansas State Wildcats in 2013-14.
Waters had an outstanding two-year career as the Widcats’ signal caller, compiling a 17-9 record as a starter. He was All-Big 12 Second Team in 2014, breaking school career records for completion percentage and passing efficiency.
After graduating, Waters volunteered as the quarterbacks coach at Iowa Western Community College for two seasons (2015-16), and then moved on to become a GA at Iowa State in 2017 under Matt Campbell.
Waters then moved on to UTEP in 2018 and remained there through the 2020 season, coaching wide receivers but also helping with fullbacks and tight ends as well.
In 2021, he moved back to Ames where he took over as the Senior Quality Control Coach, a job he maintained until his current elevation.
