Former WVU Forward Mo Wague Suspended by SEC for Throwing Elbows
Former West Virginia Mountaineers‘ forward Mohamed Wague was suspended by the SEC on Thursday for throwing an elbow at the head of a Florida basketball player.
The New York native will be sidelined for the Crimson Tide’s next game against No. 17 Kentucky on Saturday per the NCAA’s fighting rules and regulations.
Alabama head coach Nate Oats spoke on the suspension of Wague at his Thursday press conference, saying, “I didn’t even see the play. I had no idea that it even happened until after the game. But, yeah, I did have a talk with him. It’s not something that we do. He was extremely apologetic. For anybody that knows him, he’s a great kid. I think he told me that he apologized to the kid in the handshake line. I think he reached out on social media, apologized to Alex [Condon] from Florida again.”
Since transferring to Alabama after a successful freshman season in Morgantown, Wague is averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game on 64.8% shooting from the field. The New York native is seeing the court for an average of 10 minutes per game in 2023-24.
“There’s still consequences for your actions,” Oats said. “I 100% agree with the SEC’s decision. If they didn’t suspend him, we would have suspended him. That’s not behavior we condone or tolerate around here. The penalty is appropriate for that situation.”
Mahomed Wague will likely return to action on Wednesday 28th, against the Ole Miss Rebels after serving a one-game suspension.
