K-State Consensus All-American Pitcher Tyson Neighbors Dealing with Muscular Injuries
Pete Hughes and the Kansas State Wildcats baseball team will be without the nation’s best closer for a significant period of time.
According to head coach Pete Hughes, Consensus All-American pitcher Tyson Neighbors is working through a “muscular deal” and will be sidelined “for a little while.”
Hughes updated members of the media on Neighbors’ status following Game Three of the Wildcats’ home-opening series against Holy Cross and mentioned that fans would not see Neighbors pitch for some time.
“You won’t see Tyson pitch for a little while,” Neighbors said. “We’re going to be super precautionary. We’re working through a muscular deal. So we’ll err on the safe side with him.”
Neighbors, a consensus preseason All-American, is currently rated the 69th-overall prospect in the MLB pipeline. The Texas native led the league in saves with 11 last season and posted a 1.85 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 48 and 2/3 innings pitched. According to MLB.com, “Neighbors has rocketed from a fairly anonymous recruit to a likely pick in the early rounds of the 2024 Draft. Though he’s purely a reliever, he’s the best relief prospect in the class.”
While the timeline surrounding Neighbors’ return has yet to be announced, the Wildcats will likely have to look to some new faces in the bullpen to get the job done in the absence of the nation’s top closer. Kansas State takes the field next on Friday, March 1st, against UMass Lowell at 3:00 PM CT.
