College football is looking more and more like the NFL every year, and it’s about to implement even more regulations that will further liken it to the professional game.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, college football is set to bring three new rules that will greatly affect the way games feel on Saturday, including the use of in-helmet communication between players and coaches, the use of tablets on the sidelines, and perhaps most notably, the implementation of a two-minute warning.

In-helmet communication has had a ton of traction since Michigan was found to be illegally scouting Big Ten opponents with the use of a recording device in games they weren’t involved in. In fact, several teams got the chance to use in-helmet devices in bowl games this past season, including West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

It’s been expected to become a part of college football after positive reviews from coaching staffs, and now it’ll be reportedly used in 2024 and beyond.

Tablets have become very popular on the sidelines in the NFL, allowing players and coaches to take a look at previous plays in the game and evaluate or make adjustments in the game. Now, with it reportedly available at the college level, players and coaches can do the same, essentially watching film and making adjustments on the fly, which will certainly enhance the competitive aspect of the game.

Finally, the implementation of the two-minute warning will be a major change for the college game, and is something that will likely be positively received from coaches and players alike. In addition to three timeouts in each half, the clock will stop at the 2:00 minute mark, just as it does in the NFL. The stoppage in play will give players a chance to catch their breath, but it will also allow coaches a free chance to make adjustments during key moments in the game.

Of course, a stoppage in play also allows for more advertisement, so that’s likely the real reason for the new changes.

Like it or not, the NFL game has always had a major impact on college football, and these changes are further proof that that is still the case today, and maybe more now than ever.
