Johnny Manziel Boycotting Heisman Ceremony Until Reggie Bush is Given Trophy Back

NCAA Womens Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Albany Regional-UCLA vs Connecticut

Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is taking a stand against the NCAA and removing himself from the Heisman ceremony until the organization rightfully awards Reggie Bush his Heisman Trophy back.

Manziel discussed his opinions in a recent interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay and outlined some of the NCAA’s wrongdoing regarding Bush’s Heisman.

In addition to the podcast appearance, Manziel detailed his thoughts on X Saturday morning, saying, “After careful thought and consideration, I will be humbly removing myself from the Heisman trophy ceremony until ReggieBush gets his trophy back. Doesn’t sit right with my morals and values that he can’t be on that stage with us every year. Reggie IS the Heisman trophy. Do the RIGHT thing, NCAA; the ball is in your court.”

Manziel is the most recent sports personality to defend Reggie Bush, as NIL has basically become a direct adaptation of what took Bush’s Heisman from him in the first place. In August of 2023, reports confirmed Bush’s plans to file a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA, and if he was able to win, the trophy would be rightfully returned to him. It doesn’t sound like much came of Bush’s plans to sue the NCAA, but that won’t stop Heisman recipients from voicing their frustration with the committee.

Should Reggie Bush get his Heisman Trophy back? The overwhelming favorite answer here is yes. That being said, it’s tough to see the NCAA prioritizing much outside of expanding tournaments and managing the transfer portal. Only time will tell what the next chapter is in the saga of the NCAA vs. Reggie Bush.
