Oklahoma Softball’s 71-Game Winning Streak Comes to an End
While it seemed Patty Gasso and the Sooners would continue to win forever, Oklahoma lost their first game in 72 matchups on Sunday vs. Louisiana.
The Ragin’ Cajuns handed Gasso a historic loss in a 7-5 game that went to extra innings. The 71-game streak was not only the longest win streak in softball but also the third-longest winning streak of any sport ever.
Sophomore pitcher Chloe Riassetto was nails in the circle against Oklahoma, allowing five runs on 11 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in a complete game for Louisiana. With the win, the Ragin’ Cajuns advanced to 10-12, while Oklahoma dropped to 18-1.
The win over OU was the first time Louisiana recorded a win over the nation’s top-ranked team since taking down the No. 1 Florida Gators in game one of the Women’s College World Series in 2008.
While the loss disappoints Sooners fans and college softball fans, Oklahoma’s squad has more than proven its ability to bounce back from a loss. The Sooners started their incredible 71-game streak after a 4-3 loss against Baylor, dating all the way back to February 19th 2023. Oklahoma will look to create a new winning streak on Wednesday, March 6th, against Texas A&M Commerce.
