Houston QB Donovan Smith Out For Spring After Labrum Surgery
Houston head coach Willie Fritz has announced that quarterback Donovan Smith will miss the entirety of spring football after undergoing labrum surgery.
In his first season with Houston, Smith completed 64.5% of his attempts for 2,801 yards and 22 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. The injury, which Fritz says occurred sometime during the 2023 season, is to Smith’s right shoulder and will take some time to heal.
Smith is set to enter his second season as the presumed starting quarterback for the Cougars and is expected to be ready to go when fall camp rolls around.
Houston football is coming off a tough conclusion to the Dana Holgorsen era, going 4-8 in the Cougars’ inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference.
However, there’s plenty of reason to be excited for the future of UH football, with Fritz now in charge. The former Tulane head coach built himself quite a reputation while building the Green Wave into the premiere G5 program in the country.
The excitement in H-Town is palpable, but it would be wise to give Fritz and company some time to get things going, especially regarding the roster. If you plan on attending the Cougars’ spring game next month, don’t draw too many conclusions about the product you see on the field, especially at the quarterback position.
