REPORT: Baylor to Hire Former Washington DL Coach Inoke Breckterfield
According to a report from SicEm365’s Colt Barber, Baylor is set to hire former Washington defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield to serve in the same role for the Bears.
Breckterfield spent each of the last two seasons (2022-23) with the Washington Huskies and helped lead them to a College Football Playoff appearance under Kalen DeBoer last season.
When Breckterfield arrived in Seattle, he inherited a defense that ranked 11th in the Pac-12 and 108th in the FBS. In his first season, the Huskies improved dramatically, finishing third in the conference and 25th in the nation against the run. They also improved dramatically in getting to the quarterback, improving from 98th to 20th in sacks.
Washington compiled a 25-3 record over the past two seasons, including a 14-1 season in route to a national championship appearance against Michigan.
Prior to his time at Washington, Breckterfield spent one year at Vanderbilt and six seasons at Wisconsin, where he also served as the defensive line coach. Before that, he had stints with Pittsburgh (2012-14), UCLA (2011), Montana (2010), and Weber State (2009), working with defensive linemen at all of those stops. His career began at Oregon State as a volunteer in 2006 before serving as a graduate assistant in 2007-08.
After DeBoer took the Alabama job, he retained Freddie Roach on his staff as the defensive line, leading Breckterfield to look for work elsewhere. He was recently hired by San Diego State, but he will now forego his first season with the Aztecs to join Dave Aranda’s staff in Waco.
Breckterfield will have his work cut out for him in Waco, as the Bears were atrocious defensively in 2023, ranking 115th against the run (184.9 ypg) and 114th in sacks (1.5 per game).
