Doug Gottlieb Makes His Case for the Oklahoma State Job

Oklahoma State is on the lookout for a new head basketball coach after parting ways with Mike Boynton after seven seasons at the helm.

Boynton was fired on Thursday after getting bounced from the Big 12 Tournament and finishing the year with a 12-20 record and a 4-14 mark in conference play.

Despite posting a 119-109 (.522) record during his tenure in Stillwater, Boynton led the Cowboys to just one appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

With Boynton out, and players hitting the transfer portal, there’s a sense of urgency for the Pokes to find a replacement in the coming days.

One man who was hopeful of being considered is former Oklahoma State guard and current Fox Sports analyst Doug Gottlieb. However, Gottlieb was told he would not be in the running for the job, according to The Oklahoman.

During an interview with WWLS (The Sports Animal) radio on Monday, Gottlieb made his case for filling the vacancy.

“You know I want that job,” Gottlieb said. “[I understand] what we have, what we need, what needs to be fixed, how to get the culture back in line, how to bring back the alumni, how we need to connect better with Stillwater and with the students and all of Oklahoma. I fully believe I can fill up the gym and I can get the NIL.”

While Gottlieb had plenty of success as a player, he has no prior experience coaching at the college level. He was a consultant for the program this season, but with no experience at the head of the bench, it would be quite a jump for him to land the head coaching gig at a Big 12 program.

While he understands the reservations, Gottlieb pleads that Oklahoma State needs to try something different if they hope to have a different result.

“I understand anyone’s hesitance when you haven’t seen me draw up a play,” Gottlieb said. “I get it. It’s different. But if you want a different result, you have to try a different path. That’s life 101.”
