Porter Moser Sounds Off on the NCAA Selection Committee’s Flawed Metrics
While many anticipated a hefty rant from Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser about missing the 2024 NCAA Tournament, Moser conducted a calm and collected assessment of some flawed metrics to decide tournament teams.
Moser mentioned that he spoke to”20 different experts that study metrics, and all 20 experts had Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament field.”
“I can’t get an answer from anybody to tell me why, and I think that’s where the flaw comes in,” Moser said. I’m not going to sit here and call out anything, and I’m not going down a rabbit hole. I’m just going to say that the system is flawed because you hear different reasons as to why a team got it.”
“This team got in for their NET; this team got in because of their strength of schedule; this team got in because they had this many Quad 1 wins; this team got in because they didn’t have as many bad losses; this team got in because of their league, whatever it is. There is no consistency in why a team got in.”
The Sooners finished the 2023-24 season in ninth place in the Big 12 Conference with an overall record of 20-12 and a conference record of 8-10. Leading into the final week of bracketology, the Sooners had been comfortably in the tournament field, but multiple unexpected auto bids found their way into the tournament field, and the Sooners’ season came to an unfortunate end.
While many will contend the decision to leave OU out of the tournament field for weeks to come, the Sooners now head into the offseason for the final time as members of the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma will officially join the Texas Longhorns in the SEC on Monday, July 1st.
