Deion Sanders Claims His Son Would Have Been a Top 2024 NFL Draft Pick
Being the son of Deion Sanders brings plenty of spotlights into life, but also being one of the best quarterbacks in college football make Shedeur Sanders a superstar in his own right.
There was a lot of buzz around Shedeur after he got off to a blazing start in 2023, leading the Buffs to a 4-0 record before the offensive line and defensive struggles brought a collapse to their dream season.
Still, despite his team’s struggles, Shedeur had an incredibly successful year. He threw for 3,230 yards on 69.3% completion for 27 touchdowns and three interceptions and also rushed for four more scores.
During a spring press conference, Coach Prime discussed his son’s draft stock had he entered the 2024 NFL Draft, and didn’t leave anyone in the room wondering where he felt Shedeur would’ve gone in next month’s draft.
“Shedeur – let’s just get this straight. Let’s get the elephant in the room. Shedeur would have been a high draft pick this year,” said Sanders. “Let’s just stop the foolishness, and you get mad when I tell you.”
With a spiderweb of connections from his time in the league, Deion says that what he’s saying isn’t just a father talking up his son; it’s based on facts.
“The only reason I know that is because don’t you think I know people in the NFL?” said Sanders. “I’m sorry. I played for how many years, 14? Got a gold jacket at the crib, I think. I think I know some people. You know, the Jerry Jones’, Arthur Blanks. I know some people in the game – the Roger Goodells. I know some people. So, when I speak, I’m not just throwing stuff out of my head. I’m throwing stuff based on knowledge.”
Sanders goes on to tell the media that while his son wouldn’t have gone No. 1 overall, he wouldn’t have been available long after that.
“So let’s just get that straight. If Shedeuer would’ve gone in the draft this year, he probably would have been the second [quarterback]. He wouldn’t have been the first quarterback off the board. I think he had the ability but he probably would’ve been the second quarterback off the board.”
Sanders of course, is eluding that his son would’ve gone behind USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who is the overwhelming favorite to land at Chicago with the No. 1 pick.
Would Shedeur really have come off the board ahead of Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy, who could all have gone inside the top five picks? We’ll never know, but Sanders will likely have a shot at the top spot in next year’s class if he can help Colorado turn things around in 2024.
