NCAA Basketball: Florida Atlantic at Charlotte

During the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the news came down that the Michigan Wolverines were set to hire Dusty May from FAU to be their next head coach.

FAU entered March Madness as a No. 8 seed before falling to No. 9 Northwestern in overtime 77-65. For FAU, it was their second-straight season in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, May led the program to a Final Four, where they eventually fell to San Diego State. May will replace Juwan Howard, who was fired after this past season after an 8-24 season.

With social media already buzzing about March Madness, the takes came in quickly about May taking the job in Ann Arbor.

Well this is a surprise. Michigan is a solid job (less pressure than elsewhere since fan base cares more about football), but really thought May would go somewhere hoops is king. (This reminds me of Shaka Smart having his pick of jobs at VCU and going to Texas.) Big Ten $$$$, man https://t.co/Suzsm1efsT

Sources confirm @wojespn report: Dusty May is headed to Michigan. Big coup for the Wolverines, big blow to Louisville, which was trying to close a deal with May.

On a personal note, Dusty May was one of the first coaches — he might’ve been the first — that made me feel welcomed in media.

Nothing was ever a dumb question. No interview was too minor. He always made time.

Congratulations to @CoachDustyMay and his family. They deserve it. https://t.co/FQMNQd2P7Y

May became swept away with the alumni network and its fierce loyalty to the university and athletics, sources said. His belief is that that will help transcend some of the inherently transactional nature of the modern NIL/transfer portal era in recruiting and player retention.

This is a win for Warde Manuel and Michigan. Dusty May’s name was all over multiple searches, and here’s the fact: FAU had next to no hoops history with just one NCAAT appearance in 2002 before last season. 60-13 in last two years, a Final Four, two big dances. Remarkable rise.

Dusty May never told anyone he was taking the Louisville job. They just assumed he’d never turn it down. He didn’t even prioritize it from what I was told. Blessing in my opinion. I know others disagree, but he was far from the guy who would “crawl here.”

Dusty May was the top name on the board at multiple openings. He had his pick of Michigan, Louisville and Vanderbilt — which was in deeper than most people think. But he’s off to replace Juwan Howard in Ann Arbor. Big win for Warde Manuel. And now where does Louisville turn?

First immediate reaction to the Dusty May to Michigan move is that the SEC/Big Ten money matters. Interested to see the contract terms.

No idea if Dusty May will succeed in the Big Ten, but a lot of schools wanted him and Michigan got the deal done, per @BFQuinn. That’s a strong hire.
