West Virginia Narrowing Down Options in Coaching Search
Things are heating up in the offseason coaching carousel across college basketball, and today’s focus is on the West Virginia Mountaineers.
West Virginia elected to move on from interim head coach Josh Eilert following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season and is now eagerly attacking their offseason coaching search with multiple qualified candidates.
According to a report from 247Sports’ Mike Casazza, West Virginia has met with four different coaches and plans to meet again with one of the four options in person before concluding their search. Casazza mentions that WVU met with Drake’s Darian DeVries, JMU’s Mark Byington, Colorado State’s Niko Medved, and Indiana State’s Josh Schertz. The team met with DeVries and Byington in person and plans to meet with Medved in the coming days.
DeVries, Byington, and Medved all led their teams to NCAA Tournament bids in the 2024 tournament field, while Schertz’s Indiana State Sycamores became the highest-ranking team in the NET ever to miss an NCAA Tournament.
Of the three NCAA Tournament coaches, Byington’s team was the only one to advance to the Round of 32 with a win over the 5-seed Wisconsin. 7-seed Washington State defeated 10-seed Drake in the opening round, while Colorado State was sent home early by Rodney Terry and the Texas Longhorns.
The story also mentions the possibility of meeting with Washington State head coach Kyle Smith. Still, with the coaching carousel seemingly changing daily in college athletics, West Virginia fans will have to wait and see whose name sticks around.
