Buzz Williams on Jamal Shead: ‘He Can Guard Anybody in the United States’
Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams made some glowing remarks about Houston point guard Jamal Shead ahead of the Aggies and Cougars’ second-round NCAA Tournament matchup.
When asked about Shead’s defense, Williams said, “He can guard anybody in the United States.”
“He can guard anybody in the United States,” Williams said. “No matter how old they are, and no matter how much money they’re getting paid in NIL or through the National Basketball Association. He is an elite defender, and I personally think he’s an elite leader.”
Jamal Shead’s elite ability helped him to earn First-Team All-American honors this season alongside Purdue’s Zach Edey, Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht, North Carolina’s RJ Davis, and UConn’s Tristen Newton.
The Texas native put together an impressive performance in the Cougars’ opening win over Longwood, recording 11 points and nine assists in the 86-46 win. In his senior season at Houston, Shead is averaging 13 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game on 41.2% shooting from the field.
Williams will have the opportunity to coach against Shead’s incredible defense on Sunday, March 24th, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies took care of business against Nebraska in the opening matchup 93-83 in a high-scoring affair. Fans will get to witness Houston’s defense clash with Texas A&M’s offense at 7:40 p.m. CT on TNT.
