Dylan Disu Says Coaching Change ‘Saved Basketball’ for Him

Dylan Disu, Texas Longhorns

While Texas‘ basketball season came to a disappointing end in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, that didn’t stop Texas forward Dylan Disu from reflecting on his time in Austin.

Disu discussed the transition from Chris Beard to Rodney Terry and mentioned that the move helped him fall back in love with the game of basketball.

“I feel like [Coach Terry] really saved basketball for me,” Disu told SBN’s Wescott Eberts. “I was in a tough spot that first year here at Texas, and even going into the second year was tough. But when RT took over, things started to kind of shift for me, and my love of the game kind of started to return. I’m so, so grateful for him for that. I appreciate him more than I can describe.”

The major change in Austin that Disu is referencing came in the form of a head coaching change. Former Texas head coach Chris Beard was fired after reports of domestic violence charges were filed against Beard in mid-December. While the charges were eventually dropped, Beard was out of a job, which prompted the Longhorns to promote assistant coach Rodney Terry to interim head coach.

“He gave me just a different style of coaching that was a little different from the previous one [Coach Beard],” Disu said. “That really helped me get back to being me, on and off the court.”

After leading the Longhorns to an Elite Eight appearance in Beard’s absence, Terry was promoted to the head basketball coach position at Texas. With the loss to Tennessee in the books, Texas’ last season as a member of the Big 12 Conference has officially come to an end. The Longhorns will become members of the SEC on July 1st, 2024.
