West Virginia vs. Iowa Women’s Basketball Game Totals 4.9M Viewers
The second-round matchup between West Virginia and Iowa put up some incredible viewership numbers in the 2024 Women’s NCAA Tournament.
According to a report from Sports TV Ratings on X, the matchup boasted an impressive total of 4.9 million viewers that tuned in to see the game.
The 4.9 million viewers easily made the game the most-watched broadcast of the day. In addition to causing a title wave of audience members during Monday’s showing, the game topped that of any of the men’s basketball games shown on cable from Thursday through Sunday.
While the numbers were impressive for college basketball fans, unfortunately for fans of the West Virginia Mountaineers, the audience had to witness Mark Kellogg’s group’s end of the season.
With the game occupying televisions across the country, some high-profile celebrities chimed in on the outcome, including Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard, who voiced his opinion on the inconsistent officiating.
Lilliard took to X to share his thoughts and said, “I feel like West Virginia women’s team getting did bad by these refs.”
To Lillard’s credit, he wasn’t far off of the money in terms of free throw differential. The Hawkeyes outshot the Mountaineers by going 25-30 from the line, while West Virginia earned just five attempts. The free throw differential of 30-5 was one of the most lopsided foul outcomes that West Virginia has seen this season under Mark Kellogg.
While the Mountaineers’ season came to an unfortunate end on Monday evening, with all of the adversity overcome in 2023-24, it was an overall success in the first year of the Kellogg era in Morgantown.
