FAU Hires Baylor Assistant John Jakus as Next Head Coach
The Florida Atlantic Owls have their next head basketball coach, and they’re raiding the Scott Drew coaching tree to do it.
According to Jeff Goodman, the Owls are hiring Baylor assistant John Jakus, who is considered one of the top assistant coaches in college basketball.
John Jakus just finished his seventh season as a Baylor men’s basketball assistant coach in 2023-24. Jakus joined the Baylor staff on May 19, 2017, after spending the previous three seasons as director of operations at Gonzaga. Prior to his time at Gonzaga, he was on the staff at Baylor as a graduate assistant during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
In 11 seasons as a member of Division I coaching staffs, Jakus has helped teams reach five Sweet 16 berths, three Elite Eights, two Final Fours and one National Championship (Baylor, 2021).
FAU lost Dusty May to the Michigan Wolverines last week. The Owls reached the NCAA Tournament again this season, but lost in the first round to Northwestern. Last season, they were the Cinderella of the Big Dance, making the Final 4 after an epic Elite 8 vs. Kansas State.
For Scott Drew, it’s another chance for his incredible coaching tree to grow, which includes Grant McCasland at Texas Tech and Jerome Tang at Kansas State.
