Kansas Lands Former Florida Guard Riley Kugel in Transfer Portal

NCAA Basketball: Fort Hays State at Kansas

Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks made their first addition of the offseason with the commitment of former Florida guard Riley Kugel though the transfer portal.

Kugel, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Florida, spent two seasons with the Gators from 2022-2024, and will now leave the Sunshine State for the Sunflower State.

Kugel is fresh off of a successful sophomore season where he averaged 9.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game on 39.4% shooting from the field. His biggest game of the season came against No. 13 Baylor on November 24th where he recorded 25 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in the team’s 95-91 loss.

Coming out of Dr. Phillips High School in the Class of 2022, Kugel was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index as well as the nation’s 56th-ranked prospect. He also checked in as the fourth-ranked shooting guard in his class and the 11th-ranked player in the state of Florida.

Kugel became the Jayhawks first addition through the transfer portal this offseason and claimed one of the Jayhawks’ four open scholarships. With the Jayhawks still awaiting a decision on senior center Hunter Dickinson, Kansas could potentially have another scholarship to fill ahead of the 2024-25 season.
