Nicki Collen Responds to Washington Post Article Calling Baylor Women’s Basketball ‘Withering’
With the Baylor Bears catching an unnecessary shot from the Washington Post’s Kent Babb in his viral story on Kim Mulkey, Baylor head coach Nicki Collen sounded off on the disrespect.
“I’m not afraid to say I was really offended by the article that came out,” Collen said. “I didn’t read any of it. Don’t know what happened, but nothing’s withering in Waco.”
Collen elected to speak on one of Babb’s lines from the article, which mentioned Baylor as “No longer among the sport’s upper tier, another structure abandoned and left to wither.”
“I’m not afraid to say I was really, really offended by the article that came out,” Collen said. “I didn’t read any of it. Don’t know what happened, didn’t read the article but nothing’s withering in Waco.”
While Babb may not be aware that Baylor’s women’s basketball team has held an overall record of 74-27 (.733) since Mulkey left, Nicki Collen set the record straight about the incredible basketball being played in Waco.
“We are not not a first tier team and you can’t say we are,” Collen said. “You can’t get to the Sweet 16 and take a #1 seed down to the wire in a one possession game and say anything is withering in Waco… There’s some stuff blooming in Waco. If he wants to come do an article and come to Waco and write about it next year, he’s welcome.”
Since taking over for Mulkey in 2021, Collen has done a phenomenal job, leading the Lady Bears to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a Big 12 regular season title in her first year at the helm. If what Collen has done at Baylor translates to being “abandoned and left to wither,” more and more programs around the country should pray to inherit the same fate.
