Social Media Roasts Zach Edey for Claiming He Was Overlooked as a Recruit
One year after being eliminated by No. 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson, the top-seeded Purdue Boilermakers have made a run to the Final Four after taking down No. 2-seed Tennessee on Sunday, 72-66.
Zach Edey, the runaway favorite to win National Player of the Year, had a game-high 40 points in the contest after shooting an absurd 22 free throws and going 13-of-21 from the field.
Edey, who has the Boilermakers in the Final Four for the first time since 1980, might be polarizing enough to neutralize UConn, who’s looked like the best team in the tournament to this point. While they’ll have to get past Cinderella NC State, that matchup looks most likely as of now.
While Edey and the Boilermakers have been one of the favorites, he seems to feel that his team has been doubted the entire way. In fact, Edey seems to believe that he’s somehow been overlooked since high school.
In his postgame interview after defeating the Volunteers, Edey says that he was overlooked as a recruit, and one of the coaches he claims overlooked him was Tennessee’s Rick Barnes.
“There were so many coaches who looked over me,” Edey said. “You name a program, there was a coach who looked over me.”
Is that the case?
Well, according to 247Sports, Edey was just a three-star prospect but held offers from schools such as Purdue and Baylor. Tennessee, which Edey says overlooked him, did not offer him. However, the sentiment on Twitter is that the 7-foot-4 center isn’t remembering things correctly.
