Will Howard Loses the “Black Stripe” at Ohio State
Will Howard has all the experience and skill necessary to be the starting quarterback at Ohio State this upcoming season, but that alone doesn’t make him a Buckeye.
As all newcomers to the Ohio State football program learn, you’re not a Buckeye until your helmet says that you are. Through excellent work ethic and dedication to the process, many players before Howard and many players after him will have a black stripe on their helmet removed, exposing the classic scarlet stripe beneath.
Right now, though, it’s Howard’s turn. Ohio State posted a photo on Saturday with Howard, alongside fellow quarterbacks Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz, holding his black stripe as a token of achievement.
In a corresponding video, Howard can be seen addressing his new team.
“Aye man, first of all, I just want to thank God, man,” Will Howard says in the video. “Appreciate you guys taking me in here. I’m blessed to be a Buckeye. Shoutout to the Q’s, shoutout O-block. Go Bucks.”
Howard spenty each of the last four seasons at Kansas State before transferring to Ohio State. In 34 career games, he passed for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdown, while adding 921 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.
The expectation is for Howard to be named the starter for 2024, and with that, he’ll have a shot to lead a national championship contender through Big Ten play.
