Did Zeke Mayo Indirectly Announce Hunter Dickinson’s Return to Kansas in 2024-25?
Since bowing out of the NCAA Tournament in a Round of 32 loss to Gonzaga, Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks have begun the process of building a team for 2024-25.
The 2023-24 season was forgettable by KU standards, as their 23-11 overall record and 10-8 record in Big 12 play were the worst marks of the Bill Self era. A lack of depth and little help off the bench led one of the most talented group of starters in the country to fall in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.
However, it was just two seasons ago that Self and the Jayhawks hung another banner in Allen Fieldhouse, and with the right collection of talent next season, they could be a favorite to do it again.
From the looks of it, Self might just be putting that group together. In the last few days, we’ve seen K.J. Adams announce that he’ll return, the addition of Florida SG Riley Kugel, and on Wednesday, and the addition of Summit League Player of the Year and Lawrence (Kan.) native Zeke Mayo.
However, the latest addition might’ve also leaked a bit of information that would be massive for Self and the Jayhawks.
During his interview with the Lawrence Journal-World, Zeke Mayo might’ve inadvertently announced that Kansas star Hunter Dickinson is planning to return to Lawrence in 2024-25.
When talking how excited he is to be a part of Kansas’ next team, Mayo talks about playing with a center that can score “from inside and out.”
“We obviously are super excited to just be a part of a team like this, who has so much experience and depth and growth that there is still to make,” Mayo said. “This team is very gritty, they’re talented inside and out, I’m just excited to get to play alongside a fantastic point guard in Dajuan (Harris) and also a center who can score from inside and out.”
Is Mayo hinting that KU’s Second-Team All-American and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year is set to return next season? If so, it might be safe to mark the Jayhawks down as the early favorites to win the league with the returning experience and new faces that Coach Self is putting together.
