Greg McElroy Predicts Texas to be Next First-Time Winner of the College Football Playoff
It’s time to start eyeing the 2024 college football season. Sure, it might be months away, but as the calendar flips to April, spring games start picking up and summer heats up, the football feels encapsulate the die hard fans.
And as we look to the 2024 season, there’s plenty to speculate about, as to who might end up as the winner of the College Football Playoff.
But what about who will be the next first-time winner of the College Football Playoff?
ESPN’s Greg McElroy was asked that question this week during a fan Q&A session and said, “So the list is pretty short amongst teams that have won one, that big gold trophy. Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan, that’s it. Those are the only teams that have won a national championship in the CFP era.
“So for that one I’m going to go with the Texas Longhorns. Now (Steve Sarkisian) has it cooking. You could make a case that they had the most complete team in the sport last year. Now, while it will be a significant step up in competition week to week in the SEC, I think Texas’ resources, understanding of NIL, an innovative coach that has been really excellent in the portal and the recruiting trail, it just feels like for Texas it’s only a matter of time before they win a national championship yet again.”
Texas is coming off its first trip to the College Football Playoff this past season, which they lost in the semifinals to Washington. However, now the Longhorns leave the Big 12 for the SEC, which could create a new set of issues for UT. The good news is that the Playoff is expanding to 12-teams this season, giving SEC teams a better shot for multiple at-large bids.
Texas opens up the season on Saturday, August 31st, against Colorado State.
