Texas Tech QB Behren Morton to Miss Remainder of Spring Practice
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton will call it quits for spring practice and continue to rehab his right shoulder after spending the spring being limited. He injured his shoulder early last season and was limited for much of the year, but has already been named the 2024 starter.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire says that the decision to shut down Morton is in the interest of him being as healthy as possible going into the summer and fall portions of the schedule.
It will also allow the coaching staff to see some of the other guys in the quarterback room get a chance to show what they’ve got as spring ball continues.
“As I’ve said for the past several months, we have got to develop depth this spring, including at the quarterback position,” McGuire said. “This is a great opportunity for the rest of our quarterback room to go out and compete to see who will be that next guy up when needed.”
As a starter last season, Morton led Texas Tech to a 6-2 mark, including a 34-14 win over California in the Independence Bowl, where he threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns.
Morton’s shoulder injury occurred against West Virginia in the Red Raiders’ 2023 Big 12 opener as he filled in for an injured Tyler Shough. On the year, Morton completed 62% of his passes for 1,754 yards, 15 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
