Three-Star SG Carmelo Adkins Decommits from West Virginia

NCAA Basketball: Morehead State at West Virginia

Darian DeVries is losing an incoming freshman in the Class of 2024 with the de-commitment of three-star combo guard Carmelo Adkins.

Adkins committed to joining the Mountaineers under former head coach Josh Eilert on October 20th. He chose West Virginia over offers from Holy Cross and UT Arlington.

Adkins took to social media to announce the decision, saying, “Very grateful for Coach McCabe, Coach Eilert, Jay Kuntz, and the entire staff for giving me an opportunity to play at WVU. With the new coaching staff coming in, I would like to announce I’ve requested a release from my National Letter of Intent at WVU.”

Coming out of High School in the Class of 2024, Adkins was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index as well as the nation’s 289th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 49th-ranked player at his position and the 25th-ranked player in the state of Arizona.

The Arizona native wrapped up his thoughts by saying, “At this time, I will be re-opening my recruitment for the betterment of my academic and athletic career. Thanks for all the fans and local media for the support during my recruitment.”

With one of the future Mountaineers electing to head elsewhere ahead of the 2024-25 season, Darian DeVries will have a new roster spot to work with. Still, with this offseason shaping up to include one of the busiest portal cycles in college basketball history, DeVries should have some options available for replacement.
