UTRGV Hires BYU Assistant Kahil Fennell as Next Head Basketball Coach

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Championship-Iowa State vs West Virginia

Mark Pope and the BYU Cougars basketball team are losing one member of their staff, as UTRGV is hiring Kahlil Fennell as its next head coach.

Fennell spent the previous two seasons with the Cougars in Provo and is an experienced coach at both the High School and College levels.

Fennell has been coaching since 2014, with multiple stops across the nation. He got his start at Alameda High School in 2014-15, then moved to UT Permian Basin from 2015-2017. He then made the leap to the college level with stops at Portland State, Louisville, and BYU.

Fennell contributed to a BYU team that was one of the nation’s biggest surprises in 2023-24. After being picked to finish 13th in the Big 12 Preseason Basketball Poll, the Cougars finished fifth in the league with an overall record of 23-11 and a conference record of 10-8.

The former Cougars’ assistant will now earn the first head coaching job of his career, taking over for a UTRGV team that finished dead last in the Western Athletic Conference. The team finished their 2023-24 season with an overall record of 6-25 and 2-18 in conference play.

Kahil Fennell will have his work cut out for him.
