Big 12 Baseball Friday Six-Pack: Welcome Back JJ Wetherholt

West Virginia Baseball team locks arms before the first pitch.

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Friday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

West Virginia at Kansas

This series may not have been in the spotlight this weekend in the Big 12 but what a series opener this was. While West Virginia got on the board first, Kansas went on to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

The Mountaineers would respond in the fifth inning with a couple of key hits, but Kansas ended up recapturing the lead in a big way.

With the Jayhawks up 7-3 going into the seventh inning, West Virginia ended up scoring six runs to take a 9-7 lead.

Jake English ended up tying the game with his two-run blast, but it was Michael Brooks who put Kansas ahead once again.

In this game, it wouldn’t end easily. Brodie Kresser hit a solo homer to tie it at nine.

Then the reigning Big 12 player of the year JJ Wetherholt knocked in a run to give West Virginia the lead and the game.

It was a great opening win for West Virginia and how about JJ Wetherholt? He had quite the game in his return and hopefully he can stay healthy throughout the season because he makes a huge difference for this team.

Best Win

Cincinnati over TCU

I normally don’t talk a lot about Cincinnati but their win against TCU on Friday was pretty big. Pitchers Steh Logue and Brenden Garula did a nice job on the mound as they only gave up a combined two runs. And thanks to a big sixth inning, the Bearcats were able to put up enough runs to help them win the game. Now Cincinnati is one win away from taking the series and that would be a devastating blow to TCU who is still trying to crawl themselves out of their early hole.

Worst Loss

Oklahoma

The Sooners have really been struggling as of late and they started off their weekend with a loss to in-state rival Oklahoma State. Once again, pitching was a big issue as the Sooners gave up nine runs to the Cowboys. It’s been over two weeks since Oklahoma last won a weekend game and now they will have to win two in a row to take the series.

Friday MVP

UCF 1B Lex Boedicker

Lex had a big Friday night as he knocked in four runs on the day against Kansas State.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma State LHP Sam Garcia

Sam pitched almost six full innings against Oklahoma, and he managed to strike out nine batters.

Best Home Run

West Virginia SS Brodie Kresser

Brodie’s solo homer in the ninth inning tied the game against Kansas.
