Dave Aranda Not Close on Naming Starting Quarterback

While Baylor landed a nice pickup through the transfer portal earlier this offseason with Toledo quarterback Dequan Finn, head coach Dave Aranda is not sold on which quarterback will start under center.

Aranda spoke to members of the media on Saturday and mentioned that he does not plan to announce the starting quarterback until someone separates themselves from the rest of the pack.

The team lost two-year starter Blake Shapen, who elected to enter the transfer portal and join the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Shapen was a reliable starter under center for Dave Aranda’s group. Still, after failing to meet expectations in Waco the previous two years, Aranda isn’t taking any chances in naming the team’s starter too early.

Baylor’s roster currently features six quarterbacks, including Nate Bennett, Dequan Finn, Sawyer Robertson, RJ Martinez, Cade Tessier, and Brayson McHenry. Finn is the most experienced member of the group, a three-year starter with the Rockets. In his three seasons with Toledo, Finn threw for 6,984 yards and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 63-23. He also added 1,695 rushing yards and 25 scores.

Sophomore quarterback Sawyer Robertson also saw some action in the previous season at Baylor, starting in place of the injured Blake Shapen. Robertson finished his second season of college football off with 864 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Baylor kicks off their 2024 football season on Saturday, August 31st, against Tarleton State.
