Big 12 Baseball Saturday Six-Pack: BYU and Cincinnati Shake Things Up
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
Kansas State at #25 UCF
After dropping game one on Friday night, Kansas State came out Saturday looking to even things up. The Wildcats got off to a 2-0 start thanks to Raphael Pelletier and Chuck Ingram.
UCF tied the game at two in the fourth inning, in large part due to a big RBI double by Jack Zyska.
Then, with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Kansas State got a freebie when Kaelen Culpepper was hit. A Nick English sac fly made it a 4-2 game in favor of Kansas State.
The Knights would make things interesting in the eighth when Jack Zyska hit a solo shot, but that wouldn’t be enough.
Kansas State won game two 4-3, and they will play a rubber match on Sunday to determine the series.
Best Win
BYU over Texas
It’s time to start talking about the Cougars because they did one heck of a job this weekend down in Austin. After winning game one on Thursday, they fell short on Friday night to make Saturday’s game for the series. BYU jumped out to a 4-0 lead early and never looked back at all, as they won 7-5. The Cougars scored all their runs in the first five innings and Texas never could quite pull off the comeback. While BYU may not be a title contender, this series definitely shook up the standings, to say the least.
Worst Loss
TCU
First off, I want to give credit to Cincinnati here. They don’t get talked about enough due to their record, but their series win over TCU was a big one. With that said, what in the world is going on in Fort Worth? I thought the Horned Frogs turned things around last weekend when they swept Houston, and now they follow that up with a series loss to Cincinnati on the road. TCU has dug themselves a deep hole, and I just don’t see them climbing out of it right now. On Sunday, they will try to avoid being swept.
Saturday MVP
Oklahoma Catcher Scott Mudler
Mudler had a big day for the Sooners, driving in a whopping six runs, including this big three-run blast in the third inning.
Pitcher of the Day
West Virginia LHP Derek Clark
Clark pitched a complete game against Kansas, allowing just three hits while striking out seven batters. That’s pretty impressive against a good Kansas lineup.
Best Home Run
Texas Tech 2B TJ Pompey
A grand slam? Yes, please.
