Pete Mundo: Scott Drew ‘Doesn’t Need’ the Kentucky Job
With Kentucky coach John Calipari getting set to take over as head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks Men’s Basketball team, many around the world have taken a stab at determining Kentucky’s next head coach.
One name making the rounds on social media is Baylor’s Scott Drew, who has a good relationship with Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart.
In a recent video from Heartland College Sports’ Pete Mundo, Mundo shot down the notion that Drew’s move to Kentucky would be much of a step up as the long-time head coach has been provided with everything he needs to succeed at Baylor.
“Does he want that environment,” Mundo asked. “Does he want a change of pace? Does he want to be a guy who decides, ‘You know what, I’ve done what I can do at Baylor, and now it’s time for me to do it at a true, blue blood.’ What does Scott Drew want to do? That’s the question. If he wants that job, it’s likely his. The oddsmakers see him as the overwhelming favorite.”
Drew was recently listed as the favorite to land the job on a recent list from BetOnline, where he received 1/1 odds to be Kentucky’s next head coach. In other words, Vegas feels that there’s a 50% chance that Drew will be the next coach at Kentucky.
Mundo finished his thoughts by saying, “But in the end, I believe that Scott Drew, who has turned down multiple other jobs around the country, is going to ultimately say, ‘I’ve got a good thing going here in Waco. I can win National Championships here. I’m a perennial national contender.’ And guess what? He can get five-star guys there. [He] doesn’t need to necessarily go to a place like Lexington, Kentucky, to get five-star guys.”
While things can change fast in the offseason coaching carousel, Scott Drew has been incredibly loyal to Baylor over the past 20 years. Still, Kentucky will likely pitch Drew an offer that is tough to turn down.
