Big 12 Baseball Saturday Six-Pack: West Virginia Knocks Off UCF While Texas Wins a Thriller Over Houston

West Virginia Baseball team locks arms before the first pitch.

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Texas at Houston

After losing on Friday night, Texas had to win on Saturday to even the series up. The Longhorns got off to a fast start as they put up three runs on the board and were up 3-0 in the third inning. However, Houston answered right back as they were able to score three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning after a key hit from Ace Reese.

Texas took the lead back just two innings later as both Dee Kennedy and Kimble Schuessler went deep to put the Longhorns back on top.

The Cougars responded in the seventh with their own pair of home runs from Colby DeJesus and Anthony Tulimero.

With a tie game going into the ninth inning, it was Dee Kennedy who once again came up big for Texas as he hit his second home run on the night.

Dee’s home run was key as Texas went on to win 6-5 to even up the series.

Best Win

West Virginia over UCF

How about these Mountaineers? They won a tough Friday night game in some rough weather, and they came back out on Saturday ready to roll. West Virginia hit three home runs on Saturday as JJ Wetherholt, Reed Chumley, and Sam White all went deep.

Meanwhile on the mound, Derek Clark once again pitched a complete game and managed to strike out ten batters on the day. It was a big series win for West Virginia over a top 25 team as they look to now take control of the Big 12 title race. Let’s see if they can complete the sweep on Sunday.

Worst Loss

The Cougars came into the weekend feeling good after taking down Texas in Austin last weekend. But this weekend didn’t turn out so great because Baylor swept them. BYU gave up a total of 35 runs this weekend and their offense wasn’t able to keep up. Saturday’s game turned into a shootout, but BYU ended up falling 18-17. This series turned out to be Baylor’s first conference sweep since 2019 and now the Bears have an above .500 record in conference play after this weekend.

Saturday MVP

BYU 1B Cooper Vest

Even though his team didn’t win the game, Cooper had a big day against Baylor. He had a three-RBI triple in the third inning and then ended up hitting another triple in the seventh. Cooper finished the day with a team high seven RBIs.

Pitcher of the Day

West Virginia LHP Derek Clark

I will tell you what, I am impressed with Derek Clark. The guy is a machine and seems to pitch complete games like they are nothing. He only allowed six hits in nine innings and struck out ten batters. This was Derek’s fourth straight complete game, and his bullpen should be buying him dinner because he has given them a day off every time he steps on the mound.

Best Home Run

Oklahoma State 3B Aidan Meola

I am a sucker for grand slams and Aidan hit one in the first inning against Cincinnati. After this moment, Oklahoma State never looked back and won the game.
