Sunday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: West Virginia Walks off UCF to Complete the Sweep

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#17 UCF at West Virginia

The first two games of this series were great, but it turned out that those were just the appetizer for Sunday’s game. This game was like a heavyweight fight between two teams trading blows and what a sight it was.

UCF jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a pair of doubles thanks to Lex Boedicker and Andrew Williamson.

But West Virginia answered right away with a Sam White triple and a Kyle West two-run bomb.

The Knights would put another on the board in the second inning, but West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt had something to say about that as he tied the game with a two-run shot.

But once again, UCF managed to pull away in a hurry. The Knights went on a scoring spree as they were able to score four runs in the third inning to give them a 9-5 lead.

West Virgina’s Logan Suave’s three-RBI triple made things interesting in the sixth as the Mountaineers pulled within a run.

UCF ended up adding an insurance run in the eighth, but West Virginia managed to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a pair of bases loaded walks. With a tie game going in the bottom of the eleventh inning, Reed Chumley called game.

This was a huge win for West Virginia as they completed the sweep over UCF and are winners of seven straight conference games.

Best Win

TCU over Texas Tech

I could have gone with West Virginia or Oklahoma State here, but I wanted to talk about TCU for a bit. The Horned Frogs came into the weekend with a 5-10 record in Big 12 play. Their series against Texas Tech this weekend was a must win for them because if they don’t turn things around soon, they are going to miss the postseason. Maybe this is the start of something or maybe I am just reading too much into this, but this win was a step in the right direction for the Horned Frogs on Sunday.

Worst Loss

Kansas State

The Wildcats had a rough weekend in Norman as the Sooners swept them. Kansas State’s pitching completely fell apart as they gave up over 30 runs in this series. I know this team can hit with just about anyone but until they get these pitching issues sorted out, I have a tough time seeing them be a true conference title contender.

Sunday MVP

Kansas 2B Kodey Shojinaga

Kodey had a big day against Pacific. He ended up with a whooping seven RBIs which included this grand slam in the sixth inning.

Pitcher of the Day

West Virginia RHP Hambleton Oliver

Hambleton came in to help stop the bleeding for West Virginia. After the Mountaineers gave up nine runs, Oliver stepped in and pitched nearly four innings and didn’t allow a single run.

Best Home Run

West Virginia 3B Reed Chumley

Who else but Reed Chumley? His walk-off homer was not just the best home run on Sunday but maybe the best home run of the year in the Big 12.
