Baylor Freshman Ja’Kobe Walter Declares for 2024 NBA Draft

It’s only Monday, but this news week is picking up right where last week left off for Baylor as we learned that Ja’Kobe Walter will officially declare for the 2024 NBA Draft.

While the news was expected, it does confirm what many had hoped would be put off for another year as Walter is one of the best two-way players in the country.

He confirmed the decision in a sitdown discussion with Shams Charania, a senior NBA Insider for The Athletic and Stadium. He made the announcement on his personal X (formerly known as Twitter) account moments later.

When asked what he wants NBA teams to know about him going into the draft process, Walter was very confident in his ability on the court.

“The biggest thing I want them to know is I’m a competitor, offensively and defensively,” Walter told Charania. “Imma give everything I’ve got. I’m an unselfish player. If I gotta just rebound and crash the glass and dive on the floor to win, then I’ll do that to win.

“But I think there’s a lot more to my game, especially my shooting. I think I’m the best shooter in the draft.”

According to the latest mock drafts, many teams tend to agree with Walter. ESPN has Walter going 11th overall to the Hawks, while CBS Sports has him landing at No. 12 to the Thunder.

Last week was a busy one for the Baylor Bears basketball program, too. The emotional rollercoaster that was Scott Drew’s flirtation with the Kentucky job eventually came to a halt on Thursday when the tenured Bears’ head coach announced he would stay in Waco.

We also saw standout freshman Yves Missi declare the 2024 NBA Draft and, in hiring an agent, forego his remaining eligibility in college.
