Jerome Tang Gave This Advice to Scott Drew During Kentucky Coaching Search

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament East Regional-Florida Atlantic vs Kansas State

While Scott Drew and Jerome Tang are both staying put in the Big 12 Conference after a wild offseason coaching carousel, the pair did deal with some drama.

The Arkansas Razorbacks heavily pursued Tang, and after the Wildcats head coach rejected the opportunity, Arkansas hired Kentucky’s John Calipari, which brought Scott Drew into the carousel as Kentucky’s potential replacement.

Tang revealed some advice that he gave to Scott Drew throughout Kentucky’s search in a recent interview with ESPN Central Texas’ Matt Mosley, saying, “Go where you’re celebrated, not where you’re tolerated. Don’t mess with happy.”

Drew eventually decided not to mess with happy and announced his decision to remain in Waco. While Kentucky did miss out on their fare share of Big 12 coaches, they agreed to terms with BYU’s Mark Pope to become the newest head coach in Lexington.

While Jerome Tang and Scott Drew have met on the basketball court for multiple clashes over the past few seasons, their relationship remains strong despite competing with one another in the Big 12. Tang currently boasts a perfect 3-0 record over his mentor, but with the Bears hungry to get back to the top of the league in 2024-25, Drew will have many more opportunities to take down his former assistant.
