According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, UCF quarterback Timmy McClain is expected to enter the transfer portal in the spring window after the Knights went out and landed KJ Jefferson this cycle.

McClain originally transferred to UCF from rival USF and played a vital role for the Knights last season. With John Rhys Plumlee forced to miss time with an injury, McClain stepped in and started three games, totaling six touchdowns against Kansas State and Baylor.

In his lone season at UCF, McClain completed 62.7% of his attempts for 1,065 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He also addded 104 rushing yards and a score on the ground in 2023.

Coming out of Seminole High School in Sanford (Flo.), McClain was a three-star prospect and a top 200 player in the state of Florida. He opted to commit to USF over offers from West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville, and Boston College among others.

It will be interesting to see where the redshirt junior ends up spending the 2024 season, as he’s likely to have a few offers given the success he had in his short time as the starter for UCF. Could he go back to USF, where he started nine games in 2022?

Either way, McClain was set to be the immediate backup to KJ Jefferson heading into next year, so this is no small loss for the Knights. Unfortunately, if the rumors out of Orlando are true, there’s more bad news to come for UCF in the coming days as well.
