Texas Tech OC Zach Kittley Provides Injury Update on Behren Morton

Texas Tech's quarterback Behren Morton (2) prepares to throw the ball against UCF in a Big 12 football game, Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Behren Morton projects as the starting quarterback for Texas Tech in 2024 and is coming off a good year after filling in for an injured Tyler Shough.

In 10 games, Morton completed 62.1% of his attempts for 1,754 yards and 15 touchdowns with eight interceptions, adding four scored on the ground. Morton’s final game of the year was his most promising, as he led the Red Raiders to a 34-14 victory while completing 27-of-43 for 256 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

That performance has Texas Tech fans very excited about where their offense could be headed in 2024, that is if Morton can stay healthy.

Texas Tech has had terrible injury luck at quarterback over the last few years, and that luck appears to be following Morton into the 2024 season as well.

After the first few practices of spring football, Joey McGuire announced that the Red Raiders were shutting Morton down for the remainder of the spring, as he was still dealing with some soreness in his shoulder. The injury occurred early last season and kept Morton limited for most of the year.

“First and foremost, if we were to play a game today, Behren Morton would be our starting quarterback,” McGuire said at the time via a release from the athletic department. “This decision was made in the best interest of Behren’s health going into next season. Behren will resume full football activities later this summer.”

Now, a couple of weeks later, offensive coordinator Zach Kittley has provided a bit of an update on Morton’s status.

It sounds like Morton is sitting out of an abundance of caution from the TTU staff, which is good to hear. You can’t blame them either, as Morton’s health will likely determine how the 2024 season goes in Lubbock.

Texas Tech will open up the year against Abilene Christian on August 31 at Jones AT&T Stadium.
