Look: Houston Outfielders Won’t Step on Oklahoma’s Logo

As stepping on opponents’ logos has become a prominent sign of disrespect in athletics, the Houston Cougars softball team showed incredible respect for their opponents.

On Friday, Houston took on Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma Sooners. Before the contest got underway, three outfielders performed a pregame ritual but made sure to avoid stepping on the Sooners logo in center field.

While Houston was shutout by Gasso and the Sooners in an 8-0 loss, the visiting Cougars showed incredible amounts of respect for their opponent.

The respect likely stems from Houston’s coaching staff, which includes two former Sooners, head coach Kristin Vesely and assistant coach Hope Trautwein. Vesely was a USA Player of the Year semifinalist during her junior season at Oklahoma and a quarterfinalist as a senior. She was named to the All-Big 12 team in each of her four years at Oklahoma and became the Sooners’ all-time hits leader with 293.

Houston’s Hope Trautwein helped Oklahoma to a national championship in 2022 after spending four seasons at North Texas. She posted a perfect 4-0 record as a starter in the 2022 Women’s College World Series and was a major piece of the team’s title run.

While Gasso got the best of her former players in Game One of the three-game series, the Cougars and Sooners will take the field again in Game Two on Saturday, April 20th, at 6:00 PM CT in Norman.
