Texas RB Savion Red Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Texas at West Virginia

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are losing a player to the transfer portal on Monday, as sophomore running back Savion Red elected to leave the program.

Red appeared in 21 games for the Longhorns, playing both the wide receiver and running back positions during his two-year stint in Austin.

Red’s most productive season came in 2023 as a running back, recording 30 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown. In his freshman season, Red posted six catches for 34 yards as a wide receiver.

Coming out of Grand Prairie High School in the Class of 2022, Red was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 1414th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 107th-ranked player at his position and the 203rd-ranked player in the state of Texas.

The Texas native becomes the fifth Longhorn to hit the transfer portal this spring, joining RB Derrian Brown, LB S’Maje Burrell, EDGE Billy Walton III, EDGE J’Mond Tapp, and DL Zac Swanson.

Red’s portal destination will likely be outside of the SEC as both Texas and Oklahoma are operating under the league’s rules that state that interconference transfers will not be immediately eligible if they transfer to a fellow SEC school.

Regardless, Texas will have a new spot to fill ahead of the 2024 season.
