Things have changed radically in the last couple of weeks as the 2024 softball season rounds into the most important stretch of the regular season.

The Big 12 Tournament is just a few weeks away and there’s all kinds of ways that the standings could end up playing out. Plus, there are still two weekends of action left on the schedule and three teams are still very much in the thick of the race.

Let’s dive into the Power Rankings and take a look at where things stand as of now.

Tier 1

1. Texas (38-6, 17-4); Last Week: 1

2. Oklahoma (42-4, 18-3); Last Week: 2

3. Oklahoma State (39-8, 16-5); Last Week: 3

Tier 1 remains unchanged as all three teams completed sweeps of Big 12 opponents over the weekend. Texas extended its Big 12 winning streak to eight games (nine total) and looks very much like the best team in the country after sweeping Kansas in Lawrence. Oklahoma run-ruled Houston twice and held the nation’s No. 11 scoring offense to two runs on the weekend. Oklahoma State run-ruled Texas Tech in two of three games and scored 30 runs on the weekend, looking just as dominant as the Longhorns and Sooners. I would be surprised if any of these teams missed out on a trip to Oklahoma City come June.

Tier 2

4. Baylor (25-18, 8-13); Last Week: 9

5. UCF (26-18, 10-11); Last Week: 4

Baylor now owns the highest jump of the season in these Power Rankings after I probably got too low on them a week ago. However, with the way the Bears and Knights were playing, respectively, I thought a sweep might be possible, just with the broom in the other team’s hands. As it stands, Baylor is now 8-13 on the year in Big 12 play and sixth in the league standings. Meanwhile, the 0-3 weekend drops UCF to 10-11 on the year and still one game back from Kansas, who is in fourth place.

Tier 3

6. Texas Tech (26-16, 6-12); Last Week: 5

7. Kansas (27-17-1, 11-10); Last Week: 6

Texas Tech and Kansas were both on the losing end of sweeps to Tier 1 teams, so they won’t drop any further than needed with Baylor’s ascension. Kansas has now lost five of its last six Big 12 games and will need to find a way to pick themselves back up with a trip to Oklahoma State on deck. Meanwhile, Texas Tech has Houston this weekend before hosting Texas to end the year.

Tier 4

8. BYU (26-19, 8-13); Last Week: 8

9. Iowa State (17-25, 5-13); Last Week: 7

BYU has actually set itself up relatively nicely to finish the year after sweeping Iowa State this weekend. The Cougars are tied with Baylor at 8-13 in league play and will host the Bears this weekend before closing on the road at Kansas. With how the schedule sets up for them, wins in each of those series could move BYU to as high as fourth in the conference standing. Meanwhile, Iowa State’s blunder after beating Oklahoma State in a three-game series relegates them to ninth this week.

Tier 5

10. Houston (23-23, 3-18); Last Week: 10

Houston is the worst team in the Big 12 right now, and the distance between them and ninth place is pretty wide at this point. The Cougars have now lost each of their last 10 Big 12 games and are sitting at 3-18 in league play.
