Iowa Starting QB Deacon Hill Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Iowa State at Iowa

According to a report from 247Sports on Tuesday, quarterback Deacon Hill will enter the transfer portal after starting nine games for the Iowa Hawkeyes last season.

Hill transferred to Iowa last season out of Wisconsin and completed 122 of 251 attempts for 1,152 yards and five touchdowns with eight interceptions after filling in for Cade McNamara, who suffered a season-ending injury at the beginning of the year.

Hill’s decision to transfer leaves the Hawkeyes with just two scholarship quarterbacks: the aforementioned McNamara and Marco Lainez III. Iowa will also bring in James Resar, a four-star QB in the 2024 class, and is looking to make another addition to the room via the transfer portal as well.

Despite an abysmal offense, Iowa managed to go 10-4 last season and appeared in the Big Ten Championship against the eventual national champion Michigan Wolverines. They’d lose that game 26-0 and end up playing Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, where the Vols also blanked the Hawkeyes, 35-0.

Heading into 2024, Iowa is once again expected to be a defensive stalwart that is ultimately held back by a sub-par offense. If they don’t get something figured out at quarterback, that will be exactly what comes to pass again.

The Hawkeyes will open up the 2024 season against Illinois State on Saturday, August 31, and will host Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Game on Saturday, September 7.
