Iowa State WR Jason Essex Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Oklahoma State at Iowa State

Iowa State wide receiver Jason Essex announced on Tuesday that he will enter the transfer portal and look for an opportunity to play elsewhere in 2024 and beyond.

A member of the Cyclones’ 2022 class, Essex was ranked as the No. 53 wide receiver and No. 9 player in the state of Missouri, earning four-star status with ESPN’s recruiting rankings.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Essex is coming off a redshirt freshman season with the Cyclones in which he appeared in just one game, the 2023 Liberty Bowl against Memphis. It was the same story in his true freshman season, appearing in one game before redshirting.

“I would like to thank Iowa State University, Coach Campbell, and the rest of the staff for the opportunity,” Essex writes. “I will forever be grateful for all that you have done for me and my career. Lastly, thank you to my brothers who I have created somany amazing memories with.

“With that being said, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility left.”

The Winnetonka High School product leaves behind the program that gave him his first offer back in April of 2020.

However, Essex would go on to gain offers from a host of other schools that recruited the Kansas City area heavily, including Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Colorado, and Iowa.

With Essex out of the picture, Iowa State will still return a very promising group of wideouts, led by Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, a duo that combined for 119 receptions and 13 touchdown catches in 2023.
