After news broke that senior center Hunter Dickinson would be returning to Kansas for the 2024-25 season, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein named the Jayhawks the No. 1 team in the preseason edition of the Rothstein 45.

Rothstein ranked the nation’s top 45 teams ahead of the upcoming season and elected to rank four Big 12 teams in the Top Five.

The major change on Rothstein’s list came with Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks leapfrogging Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars for the honor of the nation’s top team.

The list started off with Kansas as the No. 1 team, followed by Houston right behind. Alabama was listed as the lone non-Big 12 team in the Top Five folowed by Iowa State at four, and Baylor at five.

Three other teams from the Big 12 Conference checked in on the list with Arizona, Cincinnati, and Kansas State. The Arizona Wildcats were listed at No. 15, followed by Cincinnati at No. 26, and Kansas State at No. 28.

While Rothstein includes multiple offseason updates in his rankings, the transfer portal provides an opportunity for teams to rise quickly on his list. With the deadline for players to enter the transfer portal approaching on May 1st, teams should have a good understanding of which prospects to target in the remaining field.
