Joel Klatt: ‘Utah Should Win the Big 12’ in 2024

Utah is one of four former Pac-12 schools that will officially join the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2024.

The other three schools–Arizona, Arizona State, and Colorado–enter new territory with some major question marks on their 2024 rosters. Not Utah, though.

No, unlike the other newcomers, the Utes have a veteran starting quarterback, a veteran head coach, a proven defense returning much of its production, and a proven track record of winning conference championships.

That’s why many folks, including FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt, think Kyle Whittingham’s group is a virtual shoo-in to win the Big 12 in 2024.

“Utah should win the Big 12, and they’ll be in the playoff,” Klatt said on Monday. “They’ll have a top-four seed in the playoff, so wrap your heads around that. Utah, most likely, at the end of the year, is going to have a bye and a top-four seed in the College Football Playoff. They’re the best team in the Big 12.

“Cam Rising [is] back. Kyle Whittingham… Immediately, now that they’re in the Big 12, the toughest place to play in the Big 12? Salt Lake City. All do respect Stillwater because Oklahoma State and Mike Gundy–I love ya. You guys have been fantastic for a long time. Utah is immediately the toughest place to play in the Big 12.”

Klatt’s takes are typically more palatable for Big 12 fans, considering that he once played in the conference and is highly respected as a college football analyst.

However, something tells me this one isn’t going to sit too well with folks in Manhattan (Kan.) or pretty much any other town scattered throughout Big 12 country.

Utah and Kansas State are currently tied with +350 odds of winning the Big 12 (per FanDuel), while K-State (+290) has slightly better odds of making the College Football Playoff than the Utes (+310) do at this time.

Utah and Kansas State will not meet in the regular season in 2024, but for now, they appear to be on a collision course headed for Arlington.
