Utah Football Adds Former Five-Star QB Sam Huard in Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Southern Utah at Utah

Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes made a splash addition through the transfer portal on Tuesday with the commitment of former Cal Poly quarterback Sam Huard.

Huard, a former five-star signal caller from Washington, spent the first two seasons of his career with the Huskies before transferring to Cal Poly as a redshirt sophomore.

Last season with the Mustangs, Huard posted some impressive numbers. The Washington native finished his sophomore season going 185-304 for 2,205 yards and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 18-10. During the previous two seasons at Washington, Huard saw action in limited games, completing just 24 total passes.

Coming out of Kennedy Catholic High School in the Class of 2021, Huard was listed as a five-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 12th-ranked player. He also checked in as the third-ranked quarterback in his class, the third-ranked player in Washington, and the 425th-ranked player in the history of 247Sports.

While Utah has their established quarterback returning for the 2024 season in senior Cam Rising, with a Rising working his way back to the field after a brutal knee injury and likely departing Utah for the 2025 NFL Draft, the Utes have added a really impressive player to the QB room.

The Utes will play for the first time as members of the Big 12 Conference on Thursday, August 29th, against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
