BYU Shocks Oklahoma State in Big 12 Softball Tournament, 7-2

BYU's Lily Owens, left, Chloe Temples, center, and Keila Kamoku (6) celebrate after winning a Big 12 softball game between the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (OSU) and BYU at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, Thursday, May 9, 2024. BYU won 7-2.

Kenny Gajewski and the Oklahoma State Cowgirls entered the Big 12 as the No. 2 team in the country after taking down Oklahoma in a three-game series in Norman for the first time in over two decades.

However, the Cowgirls will now have to wait to see if they’ve done enough to this point in the year to host a Super Regional because a Big 12 Tournament Championship isn’t in the cards.

On Thursday afternoon, it was all BYU. The Cougars dominated the Pokes from the onset, winning a lopsided affair, 7-2.

BYU pitcher Chloe Temples went a full seven innings against the Cowgirls, allowing seven hits and two runs but recording six strikeouts and no walks.

The Cougars recorded a clean game defensively with no errors on the day, while Oklahoma State had an awful day in that category, finishing the afternoon with five total errors.

Meanwhile, Ivy Rosenberry got the start for Oklahoma State, going 3.1 innings before getting pulled after giving up five runs on four hits. Lexi Kilfoyl finished out the final 3.2 IP, recording five Ks with two runs on three hits.

The win moves BYU to the Big 12 Softball Tournament semifinals, where they will face the winner of Oklahoma and Kansas.

Even further than that, the win is massive going forward for the Cougars, who came into today’s action as the No. 50 team in the RPI. The win over Oklahoma State will certainly boost their resume for the NCAA Tournament, and potentially playing Oklahoma on Friday would elevate them even higher.

BYU now has two wins over Oklahoma State and a victory over Oklahoma this season and certainly looks like a team that could make some further noise in the postseason right now.
