Big 12 Baseball Saturday Six-Pack: Oklahoma Clinches a Share of the Big 12 Title

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Texas Tech at #19 Oklahoma State

This was an important game for Texas Tech because they had to win this series to keep their postseason hopes alive. As for Oklahoma State, they are technically still in the Big 12 title race.

Texas Tech started the game off great as they took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

However, Oklahoma State would respond later in that inning.

The game would stay tied all the way all the way until the seventh inning. That is when Oklahoma State’s bats woke up and they woke up angry. Carson Benge and Aidan Meola crushed a pair of homers to give the Cowboys a 6-2 lead.

After that, Oklahoma State added three more and never looked back. With the win, the Cowboys take the series and look to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Best Win

Oklahoma over Baylor

Coming into the day, the Sooners needed to win both games of their doubleheader to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title. They took game one with a 9-1 win before absolutely crushing Baylor in the second game with a 19-7 run rule victory. You can say what you want about Oklahoma, but they have by far been the most consistent team in the Big 12 this season. I can’t remember the last time I saw a team have six sweeps in conference play and they still have one more series left against Cincinnati next weekend. This is the first ever regular season Big 12 title for Oklahoma and hats off to Skip Johnson for a great year so far. And in case you missed it, Oklahoma’s softball team also won a Big 12 title on Saturday.

Worst Loss

Texas Tech

Before I rip into Texas Tech here, I do want to mention that Baylor has now lost 11 straight Big 12 games. As bad as that is, Baylor didn’t have expectations this season like Texas Tech did. At one point the Red Raiders were sitting at 12-9 in conference play. Since then, they have lost eight straight Big 12 games and are now 12-17 after their loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday night. And with just one conference game left, there chances of making the postseason are probably less than 10% unless a miracle happens.

Saturday MVP

Oklahoma CF John Spikerman

John played a significant role in Oklahoma’s two wins against Baylor on Saturday. He finished with five RBIs in the first game and then finished with four in the second game. He was without a doubt the MVP.

Pitcher of the Day

West Virginia LHP Derek Clark

Derek is no stranger to this award because he has won it numerous times. On Saturday night against Kansas State, he pitched seven full innings and didn’t allow a single run. In fact, he only gave up two hits during his time on the mound.

Best Home Run

Oklahoma RF Bryce Madron

I am used to seeing Bryce Madron crush baseballs but on Saturday he did something I have never seen before by hitting an inside the park grand slam. Forget about being the best home run of the day, this may be the best home run I will see all year.
