Former Houston point guard Jamal Shead made an immediate impact early in the NBA Draft Combine.

The 6-foot-1 guard is undersized for his position but still manages to score at an efficient pace. During his senior season with the Cougars, Shead averaged 12.9 points and 6.3 assists while shooting 40.9% from the field.

During his second scrimmage of the combine, he played the starting point guard position and finished with 14 points and four assists.

With 2.2 steals per game in the 2023-24 season, Shead is recognized as one of the best defending guards in this year’s draft class, as he placed 26th in the country in steals.

He struggled to shoot from three during his collegiate career at 29.6%, so as an undersized guard, Shead is projected to be a second-round draft pick.

If he manages to put together a couple more impressive outings at the combine, Shead can find his way into becoming a late first-round draft pick.

The consensus First Team All-American finished his decorated career with the Cougars, being named the Big 12 Player of the Year and the National Defensive Player of the Year while leading Houston to the Elite 8.

According to a mock draft released by Sports Illustrated on Thursday morning, Shead is projected to be selected 40th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers.
