USC Paid Lincoln Riley Nearly $20 Million in His First Season

NCAA Football: Cotton Bowl-Tulane at Southern California

After finishing with a 55-10 record across five seasons as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, Lincoln Riley made the jump to the USC Trojans.

Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Chicago Bears, also followed his head coach to Southern California.

This move cost USC $20 million in Riley’s first season when the Trojans finished with an 11-3 record before being held to only eight wins this past season.

An 8-5 record in 2023 marked this year as Lincoln Riley’s worst season as a head coach.

Of the $20 million spent on Riley, $10 million paid his base salary, whereas the remaining expenses covered “other reportable compensation” as reported by CBS Sports.

USA Today reported that the other $10 million was connected to a buyout between Oklahoma and Riley due to his move from the school in 2021.

The Trojans will open the 2024 season by hosting the LSU Tigers on Sunday, September 1, at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. With Williams heading to the NFL, quarterback Miller Moss will lead the team.

Moss showcased his talents as he led USC to a 42-28 Holiday Bowl victory over No. 15 Louisville. The former four-star recruit threw for four touchdowns to go along with 372 passing yards.
