BYU Transfer Portal Target Chaz Lanier Commits to Tennessee

On Friday, Kevin Young and the BYU Cougars narrowly missed out on a key target in the transfer portal, North Florida guard transfer Chaz Lanier.

Lanier included the Cougars on his final cutdown list but chose to commit to the Tennessee Volunteers over offers from BYU and Kentucky.

Lanier is one of the top remaining players in the transfer portal and is the No. 1 player available at his position after posting some incredible numbers as a junior in 2023-24. Last season at North Florida, Lanier posted career numbers, averaging 19.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He also connected on 51% of his shots from the field and 44% from three.

While Lanier was listed as an unranked prospect by most major recruiting services when coming out of high school, the Tennessee native worked his way into a four-star portal prospect three seasons later. Lanier checks in as the 11th-ranked player in the portal on the 247Sports index and the third-ranked player at his position.

BYU fans have experienced a tough offseason that included a coaching coach, several portal losses, and other setbacks. Still, with the transfer portal featuring a record number of entries, Young will have a chance to turn things around ahead of the 2024-25 season.
